CROWFOOT

David Crowfoot : approx. 1784 - approx. 1853

All that is known about David has been gleaned from the very limited documents that have thus far been found. We know that he was born around 1784, and in 1806, married Mary Clemson. Census records list his job as a "timekeeper", though it is not clear for whom he kept time. David and Mary had their first child in 1807, but how many kids they had is unclear, as the first census record he appears in is 1841, long after his older children would have moved out. David passed away around 1853.

David and Mary's (known) children:

John Crowfoot, 1807 - 1884

David Crowfoot, 1821 -

Ann Crowfoot, 1821 -

Joseph Crowfoot, 1826 -

James Crowfoot, 1828 -

John Crowfoot : 1807 - 1884

John Crowfoot was born on the 18th of October in Shropshire, England. On the 6th of November, 1831, he married Hannah Rawson, and the two went on to have 3 children. Interestingly, the 1841 census shows John and Hannah caring for a boy named David Hinshley, aged 7, and David and Mary, John's parents, caring for a boy named Elizier Hinsley, aged 9.  The slight difference in spelling notwithstanding, it seems likely that these were brothers who were being cared for by the family. An intriguing detail that I hope to expand upon eventually.

John was a flax dresser and foreman, who retired sometime between the 1861 and 1871 census. He passed away on the 14th of August, 1884.

John and Hannah's children:

Margaret Crowfoot, 1838 - 1909

Benjamin Crowfoot, 1840 -

Hannah Crowfoot, 1844 - 1884

Margaret Crowfoot : 1838 - 1909

Margaret, the eldest child of John and Hannah, and my great-great-grandmother, came into the world on the 27th of January, 1838, in Leeds, England. On the 16th of September, 1861, she wed David Strachan, a Scottish man, and the two had eight children. Unfortunately, little is known about who Margaret was as a person, as records back then focused mainly on the men in the family. I hope to one day learn more about Margaret, as all I know about her currently is that she had excellent taste in hats. Margaret passed away on the 31st of December, 1909.

Margaret and David's children:

John Strachan, 1863 - 1911

David Henry Strachan, 1864 -

Hannah Mary Strachan, 1865 - 1946

Alexander Strachan, 1868 -

Frederick Strachan, 1873 - 1915

Barbara Edina Strachan, 1876 - 1977

James Strachan, 1879 -

Herbert Strachan, 1880 - 1955
